Course details

This is a two-week transformative and experiential course. In this course we explore Charya dance through learning the Green Tara dance. In addition to learning the Green Tara hands and legs mudras sequence students will know how to Take Refuge, make aspirations (Bodhicitta) and Dedicate in movement. We will become familiar with the recitation, chanting and singing the Green Tara sadhana, preliminary practice and mantra.  We will also explore the meaning behind this practice and receive the instructions to a simple Green Tara meditation from a qualified Buddhist practitioner. We will also explore the connection of this mudra dance, dance in general with neuroscience, wellbeing and Buddhist Psychology.

Charya dance has been practiced by the Newari priests of the Katmandu Valley in Nepal for hundreds of years. Charya Nritya in sanskrit means dance as a spiritual discipline. Charya Nritya is a moving mediation, tailored to specific deities, which enables the dancer to fully become the deity in body, speech, and mind, in order to benefit all beings. In Charya dance we learn to build a different understanding of space; outer space and their own inner meditative space. Charya is also called the dance of the mudras which helps us develop a deeper understanding and recognition of this Buddhist deity and explore the transcendent qualities of sound through reciting the relevant deity dance mantra and song.

During each day we weave together meditation, contemplative practice, philosophy, and movement. In addition, students will go on a virtual pilgrimage to the self-arising Tara cave in Pharpin, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. We will close the course by offering the dance to Green Tara in our inner temple, dedicating the dance to the welfare of all sentient beings.
The course will be taught by:
